Algarve Walking Holidays with Simply Salema

From sea to mountains, the unspoilt Western Algarve is a truly beautiful corner of Europe and perfect to explore on foot.  We are delighted to take full advantage of the local area by offering guests unique, catered, walking holidays, at one of our luxury beach front villas.

The pretty and traditional fishing village of Salema is situated in the Costa Vincentina Natural Park. This is a protected area, which is famous for its spectacular Algarve scenery, endless historical treasures and rare flora and fauna.  The sheer variety of landscape offers dramatic coastal paths, remote beaches, whitewashed villages, rolling hills, river valleys and cork forests. You will discover all of this terrain during your walking holiday with Simply Salema.

Tailor-made walking holidays for small groups of friends

In order for you to relax and enjoy your luxury villa holiday with us, we arrange the perfect walking itinerary by spending time discussing the fitness levels, requirements and abilities of the group, well before you arrive in Portugal.  Subsequently, we can plan a variety of interesting walks with our local walking guide and good friend, Lol.

Simply Salema’s private Algarve walking guide

Laurie Rimmer, or Lol, as he likes to be called, has lived and walked in the western Algarve for over 15 years – and perhaps knows the area better than anyone.  He is a true professional and very organised, with our walkers’ safety and enjoyment always his primary concern.

Lol has walked extensively throughout Britain and Europe, on many recognised trails. He recently completed the Via Algarviana GR13. This is a 300km walk which starts at Cabo de Sao Vincente (close to Salema) and finishes at Alcoutim, on the Spanish Border.

Lol is an expert at finding the best local Portuguese cafes and bars, which offer excellent value for money and serve traditional Algarve food and drink.  He is also great fun and good company!  With the laughter flowing after a long morning walking,  Lol may well encourage you to try the local Algarve tipple, Medronho, over a lazy lunch.  This is a traditional fruity brandy, so why not enjoy a drop?  You are on holiday after all!

Simply Salema is very pleased to be in partnership with such an excellent walking guide. Lol is able to bring our walking holidays to life, by meticulously planning the best routes, depending on the levels on the group.

Much more than just a walking and rambling holiday

You will be accommodated in a luxury beach villa, with all the home from home comforts you could possibly need (ensuite bedrooms, hairdryers, unlimited tea and coffee, air conditioning,  British TV etc).

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and this is especially true when you’re on a walking holiday and need to be prepared for the day ahead! An extensive buffet breakfast, with hot dish, is served each morning in the villa’s dining room.

Afternoon tea and homemade cakes will be waiting for you on your return to the villa after the day’s rambling.  Then, when night falls and you have freshened up and changed, you will enjoy fine dining dinner parties in the comfort of the villa on 5 evenings. Our expert chef Max cooks exquisite 3 course meals using only the freshest local ingredients, with excellent complimentary wines served throughout your meal. On the two nights when an evening meal is not provided, you will have the opportunity to wander into Salema and try some of the delightful restaurants.

A high level of personal service and attention to detail

A Simply Salema representative will always be on hand to assist you in Portugal, with the aim of ensuring that your holiday runs smoothly. The party will be chauffeured to all walking and sightseeing locations in our brand new minibus, and transported to and from Faro airport on arrival and departure. You do not need to worry about anything and every holiday detail will be taken care of.

How much walking will there be during the holiday?

Each holiday is different, but we normally offer 4 guided walks with Lol each week. You are welcome to spend the other days relaxing at the villa, with its large heated swimming pool, extensive games room and sun terraces and spend time strolling in Salema.  Or, we can explore a little more of the Algarve.   This could be a visit to nearby Lagos, with its bustling marina, fish market and boutique shops, an excursion to remote beaches and castles, a boat trip dolphin watching, or even a surf lesson!

We are very flexible and aim to make your walking holiday perfect!

Family or friends who do not wish to take part in our guided walks are most welcome to join us.  We can arrange a special itinerary to ensure that they also enjoy their villa holiday in Salema.

What will the walks be like?

Generally, our walks are designed to last between 3 – 6 hours, showcasing the diversity of this region of Portugal.  The longer walks include time for lunch, and the distance we cover will depend on the terrain and walking pace of the group.  Most walks would be graded easy to moderate, but difficult walks can be catered for.

Lol will lead your group towards the finest beaches that Portugal has to offer.  You will find stunning coves, rugged cliffs and intriguing grottos.  Inland, we go in search of estuaries and colourful valleys.  During  the Algarve spring, they are strewn with wonderful wild flowers.  Walks will often incorporate traditional villages and ancient monuments.

One of your holiday rambles will be exploring large forests of pine and woods of cork oak, carob and eucalyptus.  We will marvel at groves of oranges;  lemons and many other fruits which grow in the Algarve, including pomegranates and diospyros.  This walk is meticulously planned by Lol and is simply breathtaking.

The following are an example of some of our holiday walks. However, they can be designed specifically for individual group requirements and interests.

Coastal path east towards Lagos

This walk begins at nearby Burgau (the next village along from Salema) and heads east. In the distance, we view the lighthouse and discuss the interesting changes in rock formation. We later pass through the resorts of Praia da Luz and Porto de Mos. At Ponta da Piedade, we are lured to look down onto the majestic formation of caves, grottos and sea stacks. Gazing over the bay of Lagos, we view the Alvor estuary and the high rises of Portimao in the distance.

Coastal path west towards Sagres

We pass through colourful meadows and pasture lands, before arriving at the quiet beaches and bays of Zavial and Ingrena. Later, we ascend towards stunning views of Ponta da Atalaia and Sagres. Treading with care, we veer towards the remote Praia do Barranco, which is a favourite for wild camping! The short steep ascent brings us to Peniche Plateau, a flat and colourful area of wild flowers and meadow for grazing. With a little luck on this stretch, we may even see a traditional Algarvian shepherd with his sheep and goats! Following the cliff edge, we overlook an island and Praia Martinhal, which is a haven for wind surfers.  Crossing golden sands, we finally reach the famous and historic fishing port of Sagres.

Remote villages

Going east, we leave the village of Bordeiraon a dusty track through woods of oak. Ascending gradually, we pass isolated houses to reach an elevated point with fantastic views of the Vilarinha valley and to the west,  the Atlantic Ocean.  We descend to follow the river along the valley to Carrapetiera.  Passing through the village and lowland pasture, we reach the “wild coast” and Praia da Amado (a surfer’s paradise).  We ascend slightly to take the track along the rugged and precipitous cliffs which have been the demise of many a fisherman over the years.

The two rivers

Following the course of the Nevadas (irrigation channel), we pass through groves of citrus and other varieties of fruit before reaching Ilha do Rosario, where the Odelouca meets the Rio Arade.  Walking east, we are presented with astounding views of the City of Silves,  the former capital of the Algarve.  Further on, we pass by a Diospyros orchard to enter Silves from the north beneath the imposing 11th Century Moorish Castle.  We leave the city going south over Ponta Romana and follow the eastern bank of the river estuary to the natural springs  “Fonte do Estombar”.  Finally, we ascend to the town of Estombar.

Forests and Woodland

A tranquil inland walk through traditional farming communities, the trail leads us into the National Park forests and indigenous woodland on a winding undulating course through valleys and lush pasture.  The wide variety of flora and shrubs gives an abundance of colour in the spring.  This area typifies the natural beauty of the Algarve countryside.

For groups who require a challenge, the Western Algarve offers sectors of the route of the Via Algarviana GR 13.  For example, Cabo Vincente –Vilado Bispo.  Vila do Bispo to Bensafrim, and Bensafrim to Marmalete.  All of these routes can be accommodated into your walking holiday with us.

We look forward to welcoming your walking friends to Salema and please visit our extensive photo galleries http://www.simply-salema.co.uk/gallery/

Our self catered villa guests are also welcome to book Lol for a private guided walk during their holiday.  Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

Kind regards

Ben Marshall

All about our unique luxury ‘Special Interest’ Holidays in Portugal.

During the spring, we ran 12 consecutive weeks of memorable tailor made catered holidays at one of our luxury beachside villas in the western Algarve.

Some of our activities include bowling, painting and drawing, walking, rambling and Algarve sightseeing, but the holiday can be organised around any interest. We offer these holidays at this time of year as the Algarve is the perfect location for such pursuits during March, April and May.  The weather is warm and pleasant, but it is often not quite as hot as it can be in the busier summer months of June, July, August and September.

The very best personal service and attention to detail

By spending time with each group before they arrive in Portugal, we are able to build the holiday itinerary around the main activity, other interests and fitness levels. This way, we can organise the week perfectly. Friends and partners without an interest in the main holiday activity are made most welcome, for whom we offer a special itinerary. Whilst the others are playing bowls for example, we’ll go for a stroll around Lagos marina, head inland to the Monchique Mountains for some famous piri piri chicken, explore Salema, or just have a relaxing coffee in the sun overlooking the coastline.

Each holiday this year was a great success, with many clients booking again for 2012 as soon as they returned home!

Please read on if you would like to learn more about how our special interest holidays work and to find out what some of our guests think about their catered villa holiday with Simply Salema…

The ideal holiday for a small group of retired friends

Starting in early March, our guests came to Portugal from all over the UK, in small groups of around 8 people from a local club or society. They flew to Faro with one of the discount airlines on a Tuesday, as this can be a cheaper day to travel and is less busy. If required, we advised which flights they should book and helped every step of the way to plan their holiday during the months leading up to it.  Simple!

Greeted promptly at Faro airport arrivals by a Simply Salema company director, they were swiftly transferred west along the Algarve coastline to Salema in our brand new minibus, before being warmly welcomed into their magnificent accommodation – the Casa das Estevas, our private beach-front villa which sits in the most stunning location imaginable.

We toasted the first evening with a lavish champagne and canapé reception in the lounge, over an informal meeting. Here, the forthcoming week’s itinerary was explained and we chatted about the villa, making sure everyone had settled into their holiday accommodation.

A luxury catered villa holiday – built around a ‘Special Interest’

All of our guests were eagerly looking forward to their holiday: Taking part in their preferred ‘special interest’, enjoying great food, relaxing in the comfort of a luxury villa and discovering a stunning area of Portugal, all in the company of our highly trained staff.

Varied holiday itineraries

Each morning began with a substantial continental breakfast. This was served by our excellent professional chef between 8 and 9am. Fresh fruit juice, hot drinks, cereals, breads and cold meats were always available, but what really got the day started was chef’s special hot dish. This varied daily from a full English breakfast to eggs cooked exactly to our guest’s liking!

We then headed out for a busy day exploring the Algarve. Examples include a beautiful costal walk – or a tense game of bowls against the local bowling club.  For the art groups, it was idyllic. We headed out in search of crumbling windmills, found shade under a cork tree, settled down comfortably, and sat sketching all day.  Back at the villa we admired each other’s work. Our guests were transported to each activity in style in our brand new minibus.

Fine dining with good friends in the comfort of a private holiday villa

We pride ourselves on the high standard of the cuisine served during our catered holidays and employ perhaps the finest chef in theAlgarve, who uses only the very freshest ingredients in all of his dishes.

Whilst the guests were out enjoying themselves, our professional chef spent the days creating superb fine dining standard cuisine.  A 3 course meal was served at 19.30 each evening. This gave our guests time to for a dip in the heated swimming pool, or enjoy a cup of tea on the room terrace before showering and changing into their smarter evening wear. With the wine flowing freely, fun was had by all around the dining table!

The historic western Algarve– with a little holiday relaxation

This is an area like no other. Alongside the main holiday interest, we always found lots of time to explore the beautiful Algarve, visiting medieval towns, remarkable beaches and stunning countryside.

For those a little more energetic, we swam in the clear blue sea, went for remote coastal walks and visited historic landmarks. This included the most south westerly point in Europe – the so called ‘end of the world’ – where prince Henry the Navigator set up his famous school of navigation – before sending out discovery voyages.  No trip toPortugalcomplete without spending a little time here.

Our guests had plenty of time to simply enjoy the villa’s home from home luxuries, including the large heated swimming pool, games room, en-suite bedrooms and, importantly, British TV!

The Simply Salema difference

We believe that no other villa company offers such high levels of personal service, magnificent accommodation and excellent value for money.

If you would like to see pictures of how each week worked please see our comprehensive photos galleries to transport yourself into one of our brilliant special interest holidays in Portugal www.simply-salema.co.uk/gallery/special-interests

See you in Salema next spring!

Painting and Drawing Holiday May 2011.

We welcomed a group of 10 artistic friends from theEast Midlands for their second consecutive luxury holiday at the Casa das Estevas in Salema. The holiday went perfectly with everyone developing their art work and being inspired from a wide range of subject matter across theAlgarve. The group are returning next year.

Thank you – Simply Salema

Dear Mike, Ben, Gareth and all at Simply Salema.

Thank you for making our stay at villa Casa das Estevas such a pleasure – we were looked after wonderfully by you all!

Mike – you were fantastic – and I loved our ‘tacked’ on excursion to your favourite beaches in the Algarve.

It was a paradise to sit and paint all day then return to the luxury of Casa das Estevas – and get out of my scruffy painting gear – into something a little less scruffy – and be presented each evening with a delicious and beautifully presented dinner – your chef was amazing!!

Thank you for heating the pool for Tony – I know he really enjoyed the break in Portugal.

A big THANK YOU again for organising the holiday.

With love

Sue and Tony

Jill and Brian Hailes were part of Sue and Tony’s art group. They sent the following card:

We all had a great time on our recent ladies holiday in Salema and hope to repeat it next year – God willing.

The service you offer is exceptional, really quite unique and unlike anything we have experienced before in many years of travelling. We all felt that we could totally relax – whilst you showed us all that the Algarvehas to offer. The villa’s location right next to the beach was a great bonus and we all enjoyed the food!

Looking forward to our holiday next year already.

Our luxury Algarve beach villa – Casa O’Sonho (The Dream)

Another lovely thank you note from our guests who stayed at the Casa O’Sonho in September 2011.

Ben,
Just want to tell you how much we enjoyed our holiday in Salema.  The villa was beyond wonderful, the food in the village was excellent and the weather was perfect.  We only turned the air conditioning on twice for an hour during the entire time.

We also really enjoyed the heated swimming pool.   After leaving on Saturday we drove to several other places in Portugal and decide we had chosen the best location for our trip.

Wishing you had other holiday rentals in different countries. We will definitely be recommending the Portugal villa to our friends who are working in the UK with Charlie.

Thanks again for all being there to answer all my questions,
Andrea

Our lovely villa holiday…

Yet another kind email from some of our regular (and very happy) clients. It is feedback like this that makes all the hard work making our villas perfect worthwhile!

Hi there,

Just to say how much we all enjoyed staying at Casa das Estevas for our second year running.  Returned last night, very sad indeed.
As ever the house was just perfect for us and Salema itself the ideal place to wile away the evenings, not to mention the bracing pre breakfast sea swims a few of us love.  Paulo couldn’t have been more helpful and the maids kept the house in wonderful order.
Can I check to see if the same week next year is available – Saturday 1st September 2012 for 7 nights?
Thanks so much.  We do love it there!
All very best,
Ann

Happy Simply Salema guests

We received this email a few days ago from Di and Adrian, who stayed at the Casa das Estevas villa in July this year. They booked our private chef Max to cook a quality dinner party for a few evenings during their holiday.

Hi  Mike, Ben and Gareth

I know this email is a little late but I wanted to say a big ‘thank you’ for letting us all stay in your fantastic villa.

We had a wonderful time.

Thank you also for recommending Max. Not only was he a superb chef but also a really nice person.

I’m sure we will be back at some point in the future.

With best wishes

Di and Adrian

Dreaming of the perfect family villa holiday?

It’s cold and wet here in the UK, so why not take a few moments to imagine relaxing in the hot sun on a sandy beach with a good book and cold glass of local rose on Portugal’s Western Algarve

The kids are running around playing beach cricket pretending to win the Ashes and dad’s been off snorkelling in the clear blue sea for what seems like ages…..It’s quiet, you lie back and watch the world drift gently by….

How your summer holiday should be!

A few relaxing hours later, you all decide to top up your suntans over a light al-fresco lunch in a small seafront restaurant. You have fun trying out your new-found Portuguese language skills by chatting to the local fishermen when they ask you if you’re enjoying the fish they caught that morning….

Next, it’s time for a gentle stroll around the small village of Salema to peak inside the quirky shops and boutiques, before heading back to your dream holiday home – a luxurious beachfront villa with stunning sea views.

Luxury holiday villas in the most stunning locations imaginable

Back at the villa, the children have a great time messing about in your private heated swimming pool and games room, before dad grills fresh sardines and piri-piri chicken on the BBQ. Every evening of your holiday is spent sitting outside gazing across the Atlantic Ocean, Salema village and Algarve coastline.

A charming fishing village in the Algarve

Salema, in Portugal’s Western Algarve, is the land that time seems to have forgotten. Traditional, quiet and unspoilt, this pretty village is situated in the middle of a huge national park and is very easy to get to from the UK. The area offers something for everyone and is the perfect destination for a memorable family holiday at any time of the year.

As active or relaxed as you like!

Southern Portugal provides a massive range of things to do which are sure to keep everyone happy for your entire holiday. The coves and beaches are perfect for water sports. Have a surf lesson in the waves of the west coast, head far out to sea on a sailing boat, try a spot of fishing, watch the dolphins, go diving, or just enjoy a leisurely swim in the warm sea!

Perhaps the finest golf courses in Europe

Alternatively, play a round of golf on a championship course, have a game of tennis or maybe stroll along inviting coastal paths to remote beaches. If the family fancy a trip out, there’s a wide choice of places to see and things to do. Why not visit the port of Sagres, the most south westerly point in continental Europe? This is where the ancient mariners, including Christopher Columbus, Sir Francis Drake and Lord Nelson, passed by on their voyages of exploration and called this the end of the world! The historical town of Lagos with its ancient maze of cobbled streets and vibrant nightlife is also close to Salema.

KBGA Salema Recommendation

Luxury special Interest Holidays in the Algarve.

Here’s a nice email from a very happy group of guests who enjoyed one of our unique Special Interest holidays this spring. The Kirby Bellars Group of Artists stayed at the Casa das Estevas in Salema on a tailor-made painting and drawing holiday.

Kirby Bellars Group of Artist. Salema visit April 2011

Eight friends from KBGA visited Simply Salema villa for the first time during Easter week 2011. The flight from EMA was straight forward and stress free. We were met by Ben Marshall on time who provided our transport, a journey of approx 1 hour, to the villa in Salema village.

Our holiday accommodation was in a superb very modern villa overlooking the sea and about half a mile from the fishing village of Salema. The villa is of the highest standard of construction and of first rate comfort. (Only to be expected of the Marshall family.) The accommodation consisted of five double rooms all en suite and included bedding and towels.

As regards our meals, breakfast was arranged by our resident chef as was our superb evening meals and included complimentary wine to choice. The cooking and choice of food by ‘our chef’ was superb and provided dietary special needs, nothing was too much trouble.

Our holiday started with a look around the village and generally getting to know our surroundings. Ben gave us an introductory welcome along with some ‘liquid refreshment’ to start the evening.

As we were a mixed group of painters and non- painters partners, Ben suggested and carried out a suitable itinerary for all tastes. His consideration and friendliness, together with his knowledge of the area provided us with days out, which included venues for sketching, painting and of photography. We had the choice of staying by and going in the superb heated pool or spending time and energy seeing things from seascapes, fortresses, towns and villages and mixing with the locals.

All in all, a lovely week’s holiday at the right time of the year. Thanks to Ben and family, including Max and the lady cleaning staff from us all.

Highly recommended! The visitor’s book will endorse all and more.

Tim Hughes and friends, Kirby Bellars Group of Artists
