Summer holiday Algarve winter break Algarve

With over 300 days of sunshine a year, the Western Algarve is one of the few areas of southern Europe which can truly claim to have a year round climate, similar to California. My family have enjoyed holidays in Salema during every month of the year. Even in December and January the average daily temperature is 16 degrees Celsius!

Summer. During the height of summer, the cooling Atlantic breezes make the outdoors pleasant and bearable (further East in the Algarve and over the border in Spain it can get too hot). The breeze also keeps insects and mosquitoes at bay, and provides the perfect complement to the scorching temperatures. The villa benefits from air conditioning throughout to combat the occasional stifling day.

Autumn. The days are shorter, but remain sunny and warm. We love the spectacular colour changes and pleasant strolls on seemingly endless deserted beaches. From early November the nights draw in, the evenings become cooler and the first rain showers bring welcome relief after the long summer. November through to March is a lovely time to enjoy activities requiring a pleasant temperature, such as playing golf, walking, and painting.

Winter. Generally you will experience sunny days, often without wind. Temperatures are similar to a spring day in the UK. Occasionally there may be a little rain, but it rarely lasts for too long. The evenings are cooler and you may need the villa heating as well as the open log fire blazing. This is a great time to visit if you enjoy peace and tranquillity. With the Algarve's pleasant winter climate and relaxed pace of life, a break in southern Portugal is the ideal escape from the doldrums of a British winter.

Spring. We particularly enjoy the Algarve spring, which lasts from February to April. The land is lush and green with increasingly longer, sunny days. The whole area is a ‘sea of colour’, with a profusion of beautiful flowers and plants everywhere. This is probably our favourite time of the year.
