There are many holiday activities available on the
Western Algarve and the area offers something for everyone
at anytime of the year. All of the following activity locations
are within close proximity to Salema. For more detailed information
on each activity please visit the individual websites on links
page.
SEA ACTIVITIES
Surfing and body boarding
Some of Europe’s best surf beaches can be found on the Algarve’s
west coast, just a 20-minute drive from Salema. The wind is usually off
shore and the big rollers cascade in from the open Atlantic on most days
of the year. There are a number of specialist surf schools in the Lagos
and Sagres area offering different courses in both surfing and bodyboarding,
depending on experience.

Canoeing and Kayaking
In direct contact with nature, you can paddle through crystal clear waters
to discover hidden beaches, grottos and caves. Half or full day adventures
enable you to stop and swim, snorkel and cliff jump. With safety in mind,
whenever sea conditions are adverse, an alternative trip can be made up
the beautiful Alvor river and lagoon, the Baragem lake or down the river
Arade from the ancient town of Silves. Most of these trips will end with
a barbecue before returning to base.
Diving and Snorkelling The Atlantic Ocean is full of sea life. In a depth of only 10 meters
you can expect to find beautiful seascapes and many different underwater
creatures such as octopus, conger and morayeals, crayfish, multicoloured
nudibranchs and much more! The Algarve offers numerous dive sites.
Sites vary in depth from 5 to 40 meters and include reefs, canyons,
walls, wrecks and caves. Just off Salema beach, there is a sunken ‘French
Man of War’, suiting both the novice and the more experienced
diver.

Kitesurfing and Windsurfing
The Algarve is fast becoming one of the most popular kitesurfing and windsurfing
destinations in Europe. The region benefits from afternoon thermal sea
breezes, providing excellent conditions for kite and wind-surfers alike.
Discovering the Western Algarve by boat
Coastal discovery tours from Lagos are fantastic fun for all the family.
Whether your interest lies in history, dolphins, birdlife, caves, beautiful
scenery or simply cruising along the coast, the trips offer something
for everyone. A variety of excursions are available, from an hour to
a full day. Enjoy the coastline, stop for a picnic lunch on a remote
beach, swim, snorkel, waterski, and wakeboard or just sunbathe in style!
Local boat trips from Salema Beach
Sebastiao, our local guide, is proud to share his love and knowledge
of the area from the vista of his little fishing boat. He is an expert
on wildlife, flora and fauna. He will take you into magical
hidden coves between Salema and Sagres that seem to remain undiscovered.
Dolphin Watching
Dolphin watching is very popular in Lagos and is one of the most exhilarating
experiences that we will have in our lifetime. The dolphin's relationship
with man has been documented throughout history with many civilizations
telling stories of how this magnificent creature has come to our aid in
times of trouble; protecting us from sharks and even guiding us through
dangerous seas. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the dolphins in
their natural environment.
Sailing
The Western Algarve provides a glorious setting for sailing. North East
trade winds predominate in the summer ensuring flat seas, a protected coastline
and offshore breeze. Skippered and bareboat charters are available as well
as RYA courses.
Big game fishing
The rich fishing grounds of the Atlantic provide fisherman with the opportunity
to catch several species including blue shark, mako shark and hammerhead.
It is also possible to catch blue and white marlin and some species of
tuna.
